Vol. 12, Issue 2 These are strange and difficult times. Almost every conversation I have with colleagues is that our worlds have been turned upside down by the Executive Branch. Instantly, many kinds of work (and words) became banned. And even having these kinds of conversations weirdly feels scary, as if the conversations themselves will get us into trouble. There are no striking answers…yet. But part of the answer is staying in community with other people who care. Design for Dignity was a much needed community “energy shot”. This year’s event, Dignified Futures, will add in a bit of respite We hope you will join us in June (details below) as we push our way forward with optimism. Keep innovating!

Last week, we held our second Project 100 user-research dinner in Guerneville, CA, exploring how families acquire the foods they need for their growing families. This is a community learning from the community. We designed the night to be connective and giving. Our team made homemade chili, cornbread, and salad. We sat down to a meal -10 parents, 17 kids, and seven community team members taking on the "user researcher" role. It was loud. It was chaotic. Kids were coloring, making things, and reading while their bigger humans were creating journey maps and engaging in interviews. All of this brings me back to why we gather, why sitting across from someone or next to them is powerful, why having this shared experience as a community is so needed, and why it is more than okay for user research to be messy, like our lives really are. The community research team was bubbling with energy about what happened and what they learned. By the time I crawled into the car to drive back to San Francisco, I was a sweaty mess, perfectly satiated by it all. One of our many maps is the photo in the header of this newsletter. 🐌Cute: A rare sea slug brings joy to a scuba diver. Photographing one has been on his bucket list since being discovered only 30 years ago. Cute things come to those who wait! (I guess.) 🦸🏽♀️“Recycling Center” Transforms into Bacteria Destroyer: Researchers found that the recycling centers in our cells that typically hangout to recycle damaged proteins are automatically transformed into weapons when encountering dangerous bacteria… Kind of like a superhero in disguise!
