Vol. 12, Issue 1 Last week, I met with my “ lab leaders” coffee clutch - a group I’ve been organizing for several years. Every quarter, we meet for 90 minutes to explore life and work. Today, we stumbled into an exploratory conversation on “anticipatory joy” - that pleasurable feeling just thinking about a future possibility - the lottery, an upcoming vacation, or seeing old friends. Well…I am swimming in anticipatory joy as I think about reconnecting with the Design for Dignity community in June. Amy Heymans and I have been planning for the past few months, and finally, the universe aligned when last year’s keynoter, Monique Smith, raised her hand to bring the gathering to Atlanta. I had the great pleasure to co-present with Dana Pedersen (Guerneville School District) our systems and design work on adverse childhood experiences. I featured the system map last year in this newsletter, but late last year, we switched to improvement and innovation: To continue the community-school effort, we launched Care Closets, which provides needed school supplies and clothing to families in a store-like experience right at the school To boost early childhood development, we’ve submitted grants to extend Kindergym, a play-based learning program providing a safe and stimulating environment for children ages 0-6 and their parents/caretakers To bring more safety to those who use drugs, we’ve initiated the installation of three vending machines that will have health-related items like Narcan and fentanyl testing strips To ensure more basic needs are met, the team launched a human-centered design project to ensure that food and nutrition access is simple and streamlined …and we are just getting started.
