Vol. 11, Issue 10 For me, at this time of year, there is a sense of winding down and excitement for the holiday season. It is my favorite time of year, and I’ve had the privilege of designing my Decembers to be “dark” - meaning less project work and more time for daydreaming. The Better Lab at UCSF holds a monthly “Design Wednesday” series, and I was thrilled to share my point of view on why system thinking and design are so complementary and powerful. See the full talk here, but here are a few takeaways: Systems Thinking is a strategic mindset and framework. It can be painful to explore these approaches once you go down the rabbit hole on Google. But the essence is powerful - they simply help you choose where to apply your precious resources and bandwidth. System Thinking is powerful at the inter-organizational and/or community levels. While it can be useful across an organization, the real magic happens in interactions between multiple entities and stakeholders. Systems Thinking is an amazing stakeholder catalyst. Though a “side effect,” the approaches give stakeholders deep ownership as they illuminate their own systems and stories, thus building deeper relationships.

🤖📊Bottle of the Bots. UC Berkeley students designed a very hot tool at the moment - a leaderboard of which bot is most accurate. Check out the Chatbot Arena Leaderboard. 🤗🐭Stress Dulls Joy. Yeah, obvious. However, in studies with mice, there was a clear reduction in the ability for pleasure when stressed. So, definitely work on that mindfulness! 📼👽VHS? I had to do a double take, but yes, the 2024 movie Alien Romulus was just released on VHS. And I thought vinyl was only the old tech coming back.
