Vol. 11, Issue 4 When thinking about equitable healthcare, one standout challenge in many places around the world is LGBTQIA+ patient care - great in a few places, mediocre in many more, and outright awful and even forbidden in far too many. These disparities are only one of many that LGBTQIA+ people face each day. For teens and young adults, it is only compounded as they step into their whole selves. And it's why I continue to be proud of having helped bring imi.guide to life. Imi just turned two (!) this Pride Month and has assisted over 100k teens and young adults with safe identity exploration, reducing that compounding stress. Founder 20+ Years of Desing in Healthcare
The incredible Kim Erwin of IIT’s Equitable Healthcare Action Lab released a white paper on what was learned in the 20-plus years since design appeared more formally in healthcare. I couldn’t be prouder to join the committee that assisted her in this work. Many on this committee and/or interviewed have been part of the ILN in big and small ways over those 20 years - including Kaiser Permanente, Mayo Clinic, Sutter Health, UPMC, Ascension, Mass General Brigham, Northwestern, UCSF Health, and the VA. These organizations, in the spirit of coopetition, deepened design in healthcare in so many ways. Do give the report a read. Six Points of Predicted Outsized Impact
I shared our map last month (see the interactive, Spanish-English system map here) and am happy to share that our Sonoma County stakeholders have narrowed down to the first six (6) leverage points that they predict will have an outsized impact in lowering ACEs in the Lower Russian River Area. The six are: Screening for Maternal & Child Mental Health Services Reducing Family Stressors Elevating Community Voices Reducing Parental Use of Drugs for Coping Accelerating the Implementation of “Community Schools” Focusing on Early Childhood Interventions

When Amy Heymans and I set out to create Design for Dignity, "the gathering,” we did not imagine 150 social impact and design warriors creating such beautiful chaos. They leaned in and turned on, energized and decompressed, shared with abandon, and built new relationships to power up design futures. It was a powerful few days, and so heartfelt in connecting with ILNers again. Here are a couple of posts from a few folks you may remember: Jennifer Leiberman, Mike Lin, and Sofi Berkovist I thank every workshop designer, keynoter, and presenter for the care they took in waking us up to new ideas, techniques, and ways of knowing. George Washington’s Cherries: Yep. While restoring part of Mount Vernon, workers found a stash of perfectly preserved cherries buried before the American Revolution. Scientists will attempt to extract DNA to bring back America’s first president’s fruit that he was so well known for: Mimicking the Human Touch for Recycling Trash: Robots are being taught how to sort and handle trash using AI, robotics, and a delicate human touch, and because they are more accurate, recycling is greatly improved. A Cancer AI Co-Pilot for Docs: AI is changing how doctors care for cancer patients. A new “co-pilot” AI tool sifts through mountains of data to recommend to oncologists which additional test would be helpful for a particular cancer patient.
