Vol. 10, Issue 2 It's been a whirlwind of a summer. A hot nation - both in temperature and politically - is keeping all of us on edge. How might we channel that angst into something good? Pulling back down into what drives joy and pain in our communities is meaningful, relevant, and steps away. Take the Lower Russian River in Northern California. They identified toxic stress in 0 - 5 years as an acute and long-term health and well-being challenge, and they are using systems thinking to peel back the obscured systems layers to illuminate why their local system is generating its outcomes. As their coach and guide in this effort, focusing on something real and local is a personal antidote to the national gloom and doom news cycle. You might remember Ann Somers from Atrium’s Innovation Engine (and former ILN Board Member!). She is now the director of health care research at the Clayton Christensen Institute--a nonprofit, nonpartisan, innovation-focused think tank where she focuses on business model innovation and disruption in health care - like "How might we transform a sick care system into one that values and incentivizes total health?" Most recently, she tackled the thorny topic of worsening maternal health outcomes, especially for working moms. Her latest report highlights why we've failed to improve maternal health nationally and how a new approach can benefit working mothers, their employers, and society. Sparks: (Sometimes) Cool Stuff
I Am So Stuffed Up! The weird, wacky tale of why a drug that so many of us took for an incredibly long time actually didn't work….for decades. Brain Repair: While the first Spark (above) is about legal drugs that don't work, this story is about (sometimes) illicit drugs that are showing promise in more and more applications every day. "... psychedelics [might] limit brain damage after injury, stimulate the birth of new neurons to replace impaired ones, and open the learning windows that let the brain acquire new skills."
