Vol. 11, Issue 8 Our caregivers are burned out with too many tasks per person. And burnout continues to be a top issue for many organizations and professions. We say the words, but it hits home when burnout circles your loved ones. In the past few years, I’ve caught medication errors, treatment errors, and plain old seeming neglect for loved ones in the hospital. This is so concerning. My loved ones are fortunate to have an advocate who knows how to ask questions, check work, and attempt to make the care as good as possible. But what about those who don’t know how to advocate or don’t even know they are allowed to? I don’t blame doctors, nurses, or other paid caregivers; they do their best in challenging situations. Instead, from a system perspective, it makes me wonder, “Why is the system producing these kinds of conditions? Why is the system burning out great, caring people?” AI promises to make some of this better, but I am deeply concerned about the economic tension between creating more reasonable conditions for all caregivers and AI just making it possible to work even harder. Book time here. 🤖Safety Net Innovation Summit on AI & Trust It was a powerful three days that I was honored to co-design and co-emcee, and it marked the return of the Center for Care Innovations’ much-beloved gathering. With a focus on AI and trust, the 112 attendees entered a three-day “funnel” designed to start inspirational but then spin down into the concrete. Here are just a few takeaways from the final day’s action steps: Healthcare orgs should immediately create AI governance committees to protect their orgs and create sane and safe pathways for AI adoption. Safety Net organizations should concentrate their purchasing power into consortiums to evaluate, test, purchase, and implement AI tools. Healthcare orgs should build a sandbox to enable staff and patients to build trust in AI systems, especially in patient populations who are leery of how their data will be used. …and more coming soon!
🪞A Whole New ILN Look
Launching the new ILN.org back in January 2023, I leaned into the learning mindset and prototyping. Why build so confidently when you don’t know enough? These past 20 months have refined what the new ILN is, what it does, and how it wants to show up. I was so excited to work with a fantastic colleague and designer, Alexis Turim (see below), to bring that vision to life. I wanted a combination of serious, fun, professional, and creative. A lucky first job out of design school, Alexis joined Kaiser Permanente's Innovation Consultancy and the ILN back in 2015. She's spent the last decade creating better possibilities within old systems—with experience in-house and consulting across healthcare, education, and government services. A firm has combined AI and a vertical berry garden to produce berries year-round. 🤖 Dr. AI Will See You Now: From the NYT, “Increasingly, people…are reaching for A.I. chatbots to explain new symptoms, weigh treatment options and vet their doctors’ conclusions.” And the link to the KFF Poll mentioned in the article. This continues to shatter the myth that seniors are technophobic. 😀 More Practical Tips on Using AI: I am astounded by all the ways people are using AI. In this WSJ article, the author gives practical tips as a writer. Loved the idea of having AI interview you to break through writer’s block!
