Vol. 11, Issue 6 I virtually huddled with Jules Lancee, Hillary Carey, and Adrienne Philpart this past few weeks as we riffed on our proposal for SXSW in 2025 (see below; we need your vote!). Aside from the topic, I realize I am excited to spend in-person time with this crew of luminaries in Austin. And this past Thursday, I attended an innovation dinner, and that in-person time with colleagues gave me joy. When I think about the highlights from the past year, not one is from a virtual gathering. I don't doubt that virtual is effective, but I can say my soul comes alive when I am in the physical presence of others. And so, all three items this month are in-person related. Now go enjoy a coffee/cocktail with a colleague in the real physical world! Happy Innovating!

On Thursday night, I hung out with several other healthcare innovation leaders for HealthTech Hang’s Dine & Develop. Harry Goldberg guided a conversation just enough to keep it both light and meaningful. Here are Harry’s takeaways: Prioritize Rapid Action Over Prolonged Strategy: Innovation thrives when teams move swiftly from idea to execution. Excessive planning can stifle momentum; acting on two-way door decisions encourages quicker progress. Integrate Design Thinking for Improved Processes: Incorporate creative approaches, like Disney's interactive experiences, into healthcare to enhance patient interactions and reduce friction, such as in prior authorizations. Embed Innovators Within Core Business Units: Deploy innovation FTEs into business units to infuse an innovation mindset directly into operations, ensuring alignment with core business goals. Leverage Venture Capital Mindset for Big Bets: Adopt a VC approach to innovation, making bold, milestone-driven investments where the majority may fail, but the successes can be transformative. Build Resilience Against Corporate Immune Systems: Ensure innovation efforts are not too close to the business to avoid being quashed by the company's natural resistance to change. Balance “Serious Innovation” with Playfulness: Dedicate one-third of innovation efforts to guaranteed success while allowing the rest to be experimental and creative, fostering a culture that embraces failure. Incorporate AI Governance into Innovation Strategy: With AI's growing influence, healthcare innovators must focus on integrating AI and establishing governance frameworks to stay competitive and ethical.
