Vol. 11, Issue 3 What is leverage? We say these words so casually, but in a community workshop to identify leverage in a community-generated system map, I needed everyone in the room to have a visceral feeling of it. So, we started with an exercise of lifting a spoon from several different points on the spoon - it's very hard to lift it from the tip (low leverage and lots of work), and it's easy to lift it from the center (high leverage and less work). The stakeholders lifted their spoons both ways to the same height, and they now more deeply understood leverage and were ready to identify leverage points on their much more complex system map. We Have a Map!
The incredible community of the Lower Russian River Area has been working together for almost a year on adverse childhood events. In that time, they strengthened cross-organizational collaboration, convened a powerful stakeholder group that includes parents and grandparents, built a system map, and, most recently, identified close to 20 leverage points that will shift the system for the better. As their system and innovation coach, I am so grateful to be part of this team and excited to share access to our interactive, Spanish-English, system map. Long-time ILNer and board member Lyle Berkowitz exemplifies the innovation career: physician, technologist, creative, and entrepreneur. He tackles complex challenges and readily shares his wisdom. Since we heard from him last, Dr Lyle started his “final” company (he says!) called KeyCare, which is the only national virtual care group working on Epic’s EMR system, enabling them to offer fellow Epic-based health systems access to a marketplace of virtual care providers. He continues to have the time of his life building up both technology innovations and great providers, with a goal to improve scalable access to healthcare for all. You knew he was clever! An AI Innovation Center: Friend of the ILN Sutter Health opened its new AI healthcare innovation center in San Francisco. The center features a prototype “hospital room of the future,” equipped with remote monitoring devices that automatically update patients’ medical records and a Genius Bar-like setup where Sutter patients can get help signing up for and navigating digital health apps. Way to go, Sutter! CRISPR Chops Out HIV: “A new study has unveiled a likely future cure for HIV which uses molecular scissors to ‘cut out’ HIV DNA from infected cells. To cut out this virus, the team used CRISPR-Cas gene editing technology—a groundbreaking method that allows for precise alterations to a patient’s genome.” ThriveLink & Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia: Two of the ANA’s innovation award winners: ThriveLink quickly connects users to needed social services (so cool!), and Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia is a mentorship program to increase diversity through immersion (so needed!).
